Endoscopic Training Award

The ASGE Endoscopic Training Award provides Advanced Fellows or Junior Faculty the opportunity to train outside of their home country with a premier GI Endoscopist or group to advance their training. The award assists in underwriting reasonable and customary travel and living expenses for a period of one to three months. The grant consists of a $5,000 cash stipend issued prior to the recipient's travel.  Up to three awards will be available annually for North American and International ASGE members.

Congratulations to the 2026 Endoscopic Training Award Recipients

Alda Andrade, MD

Alda Andrade, MD, Portugal, currently at the Unidade Local de Saúde do Alto Minho – Viana do Castelo, will travel to the Center for Diagnostic and Therapeutic Endoscopy at Keio University School of Medicine in Tokyo, Japan, to train with Motohiko Kato, MD, PhD, FASGE. Her training will focus on advanced clinical techniques in diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy, including expert procedural workflows, case selection, procedural strategy, complication management, and quality assurance within the specialized endoscopy program at Keio University Hospital.

Madhav Desai, MD, MPH

Madhav Desai, MD, MPH,Houston, TX, currently at the Division of Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition, UT Health McGovern Medical School, will travel to the Digestive Diseases Center at Showa University Koto Toyosu Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, to train with Haruhiro Inoue, MD, PhD, FJGES, FASGE. His training will focus on advanced endoscopic procedures, including endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM).

Brenton Davis, MD

Brenton Davis, MD,San Francisco, CA, currently at Kaiser Permanente San Francisco Medical Center – Gastroenterology, will travel to the National Cancer Center Japan to train with Yutaka Saito, MD, PhD, FASGE. He will gain advanced exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy through observation and simulation training at the National Cancer Center Hospital, focusing on techniques such as ESD, EMR, ERCP, and EUS guided biliary drainage, as well as optical diagnosis of early GI neoplasia and multidisciplinary oncologic care, to prepare for independent practice in advanced endoscopy.

Review Process

Individuals applying for 1-2 year advanced fellowships do not qualify for this award.

All Applicants Must:

  • Be an ASGE Member (Active, International or Trainee)
  • Be the equivalent of Junior Faculty or Advanced Fellow
  • Be proficient in the English language
  • Be advancing knowledge and/or skill on a particular subject

Definition of Junior Faculty:

Junior Faculty are individuals within the first 5–10 years of their academic or clinical appointment.

  1. A 1-2 page Statement of Learning Objectives for travel including:
    • Description, purpose and expectations of training and importance to the applicant's career development. This must include very focused training goals and how the applicant will utilize the skills acquired after completing the training
    • Duration of training
    • Anticipated dates of training
  2. A letter of acceptance from the institution where applicant would like to study and name of ASGE member(s) with whom he/she plans to study including:
    • Possibility of hands-on training on patients, training models, and/or observership
    • Endoscopic technique(s) offered for training at host-institution and guaranteed volume of endoscopic procedures during indicated training period
  3. Additional information required:
    • Curriculum Vitae (CV) including current position
    • A letter of recommendation and release from the applicant's current Chief of Service
    • A statement listing additional sources and amount of funding to be used for this training

ASGE's International Committee will review the applications and make recommendations to the Governing Board, who will make the final decision.

Grants not meeting the stated requirements, such as exceeding the page limits, will be administratively returned without review.
